CRITERION Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA) is a selective and differential culture medium specifically designed for the isolation and differentiation of staphylococci in clinical and quality control laboratories. The high salt concentration (7.5% NaCl) inhibits the growth of most gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria while allowing salt-tolerant Staphylococcus species to thrive. Mannitol fermentation produces a visible yellow color change around colonies, enabling rapid differentiation of pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus from other staphylococcal species.
